Mooney VR46, Marco Bezzecchi

It was a day that was filled with rain and the riders started on a rain-soaked track. Marco Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia started from the first row. Many riders carrying injuries from the tumultuous first round at Portugal, there were only 17 riders for this race of the season.

With Marco Bezzecchi and Luca Marini as their riders, the Mooney VR46 racing team, owned by MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi, achieved their first victory. Italian rider Bezzecchi finished ahead of Frenchman Johann Zarco with Alex Marquez, who started on pole position, rounding out an all-Ducati podium. It was a triple win for Ducati.

Francesco Bagnaia, the defending champion who won in Portugal last week, unfortunately crashed with just 8 laps remaining. This cost him 20 points and he finished the race in 16th position. Bezzecchi dominated in Termas to become the new title leader. “Normally I’m not very good when it rains, but today the sensations were incredible,” said the Italian who now has a 9 point lead in the championship.

ABOUT MARCO BEZZECCHI

All of 24, Marco has been into professional racing since 2015 where he made his debut at the Moto3 Junior World Championship. He ended the year by finishing among the top ten on three occasions. He moved on to the Moto3 World Championship in 2015 with two wild card appearances and finishing 26th in Qatar. Marco rode for Mahindra Racing in 2016 and 2017 and had his maiden podium (3rd place) in the Moto3 Championships. 2018 saw him switch teams to PrüstelGP where he won three races in Argentina, Austria and Japan. In 2020, alongside Luca Marini, Marco joined the newly minted Sky Racing Team VR46. Both riders had a good season by winning five races between them, among which Bezzecchi won the races in Austria and Valencia. He stood 2nd in Misano and Rimini, and finished 3rd in three other races. He finished the season with seven podiums, 184 points, and 4th in the championship standings. The 2021 season was far better than any that Bezzecchi had. He rarely finished beyond the top five. He finished the year 3rd in the rider's championship, with 214 points.

After his journey in the Moto2 Championships, Marco Bezzecchi entered the MotoGP World Championships in 2022 where he joined the Mooney VR46 Racing Team and partnered with his former teammate Luca Marini.
